Best space grateful dead2/24/2024 ![]() The top rated Caution (Do Not Stop on the Tracks) is from 1972. But if you go to Headyversion, the top-rated Dark Star is the Veneta version (good but not reflective of the cosmic, psychedelic genius that's in this song's DNA). It was mostly played during this early era. Take "Dark Star": THE iconic Grateful Dead song. Sure, the mid-60s were that rough band, still learning how to strike magic, but as of late 1967 they were absolutely on fire, reaching the height of their powers in late 1969 and early 1970. There is an undying love for what I consider to be the bland year of 1977, and a lot of nostalgia for the Brent Mydland era.īut while all this music is good, it just doesn't hold a candle to what the group achieved in their early years. (11/8/69 and 5/2/70 are mind blowing).īut the group's fanbase - many of whom I'm sure are on this site - seem to turn a HALF-blind eye to their 60s work and almost dismiss it as a novelty, instead focusing on the 1970s and 80s. Much of the music from this era is among the best music - of any kind - that I've ever heard in my life. Particularly in the psychedelic era of the band's origins, they were playing their most creative, frenetic, cohesive, focused and musically intense work. ![]() Grateful Dead are one of my favorite artists of all time because of their output from 1968 to 1970, with many outliers stretching through their hiatus in 1974.
